College Consultants of Colorado Ethics Statement

Established in 2010, College Consultants of Colorado (CCC) is a consortium of independent educational consultants (IECs) whose professional training and backgrounds allow them to effectively serve students and their families with college planning. CCC members are required to belong to at least one of the following professional organizations and are expected to adhere to the ethical guidelines of the specific association/s:

National Association for College Admissions Counseling

Independent Educational Consultants Association

Higher Education Consultants Association

American Institute of Certified Educational Planners

Rocky Mountain Association for College Admissions Counseling

Independent Educational Consultants may help students and families with many aspects of the college planning process such as:

  • Academic transcript(s) and student achievement review
  • High school curriculum planning
  • Goal-setting and extracurricular guidance
  • Major and career exploration
  • Standardized test guidance and planning
  • College search and selection assistance
  • College application and essay support
  • Financial aid and merit scholarship information

As in any industry, IECs have different levels of experience and expertise. While IECs cannot guarantee outcomes, families should seek out an IEC who has the student’s best interest at heart. They should also look for an IEC who has firsthand knowledge of colleges around the country and expertise in the complexities of college admissions, and who is committed to maintaining high ethical standards in their practice. Families should ask the following questions during the process of hiring an IEC:

  • What led you to become an IEC?
  • What is your professional training and educational background?
  • How many colleges do you visit each year?
  • How do you keep up with new trends, academic changes, and evolving campus cultures?
  • Do you belong to any professional associations?
  • What professional conferences or training workshops do you regularly attend?
  • Can you give me a list of references I may contact?
